naco diary

(below are the email updates sent out to supporters of my trip to Naco, Sonora, Mexico in March 2016)

March 15, 2016

¡Hola!

I’m excited to head down to Bisbee and Naco for the first time tomorrow! (Kaylee has already been there a couple times herself.) Thanks to everyone who supported us throughIndiegogo!

I’ll be staying with Tom Carlson over the next few days, meeting people from both communities and helping to lay some more of the groundwork for the project. Each night, as promised, I will send you a quick update on what I’ve been up to. I’m very excited for all the great people I will meet in these wonderful communities.

Keep your eyes peeled for my first update tomorrow night! And please feel free to send any questions or thoughts tonthnhwtt@gmail.com!

¡Hola!
Fourteen hours, three buses, two cars, and a plane later, I’m finally with Tom in Bisbee.

Tomorrow we will head into Naco in the morning and meet some of the people most involved in the Mural Project, including Frank (our lead artist) and Lupita (of Naco Wellness Initiative). I’ll also be meeting with Bijoyini, who is videorecording the project. After that we’ll go to a meeting with the Legacy Foundation.

Anyway, that’s enough for now. I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow!

¡Hola!

I had a wonderful first full day in Bisbee in Naco–full to the brim, but in the best way possible.

diary 2 - naco diary

First, Tom and I went over to Naco to visit Lupita and the Casas Saludables clinic. Everyone at the clinic was wonderfully welcoming and I got to see some of the photos from past Naco Wellness Initiative Projects. I also got to see the site of our first mural, the library, and visited the Naco DIF and Maria Lena.

Later, I met with Bijoyini and Juan Carlos, who will be doing video for the project, and also got to meet Doug and Sarina, Bisbee Council and NWI board members, at a Legacy Foundation workshop on board development.

Tomorrow morning I’ll go into Naco again and will be able to see a practice drawing session led by Frank in the afternoon. And then I’ll update you again! Happy St. Patrick’s Day.

¡Hola!

After a long day of travel (thick with evidence of Murphy’s law) I have finally arrived home to Lexington! Many apologies for not sending an update yesterday–I was totally exhausted and it slipped my mind.

diary 5 - naco diary

Yesterday was an absolutely wonderful day. I went into Naco in the morning and watch the promoturas put on a class, had some food with them (delicious chilaquiles), and then also got to meet some fellas from the Catholic church who came down to visit. Throughout all of this I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of Spanish I remembered and enjoyed the many small conversations we navigated.

In the afternoon, after picking up Frank, we participated in their escuelitas program and then had the second drawing session for the mural. A highlight was having Jorge, an artist from Naco, working together with Frank and with the kids.

There are so many stories to tell, but I believe this is longer than I ever wanted my updates to be. Thank you so much for your support! I hope to tell you more in person.
